Remote sensing
Remote sensing technologies exploit the electromagnetic spectrum to probe the earth. From the blue end of the spectrum (ultraviolet) to the light we see (visible) to infrared and beyond, the use of electromagnetic energy has become an important part of modern archaeological fieldwork. Devices such as microwave radars probe the earth remotely – without digging but by sending energy into the ground – hence the phase remote sensing. As the illustration shows, different wavelengths of energy reveal different types of archaeological remains.
