This huge masterpiece is Seurat’s most famous painting. It was shown at the final impressionist exhibition in 1886, where it caused a sensation. Viewers could appreciate that it was a great achievement and that marked a revolutionary development in art, but some also suspected that it heralded the end of impressionism. . . . .
