Ruth (American Photographer - 1905-1998) spent months securing funds, preparing for the journey, and organizing her team. On the evening before her departure, the “set the clock for 3.45 and eased down on the bed to rest for the couple hours left. Was I going on a foot’s journey as the men had said? I had been obsessed with this idea of getting the waterfall measured for months, and compulsion to do it had colored every day of my life

She and her team set out on April 23, 1949, for what was to be three-week adventure. They traveled up the Rio Acannan in dugout canoes and camped in drenching rain. On a diet of canned sardines, pineapple, and spaghetti, she lost twenty pounds while enduring extraordinary rugged conditions. In the book ‘Churn Meru - The Tallest Angel,’ she describes the relentless insect population that inhibits the jungle, including the dread monkey-faced tarantula

. . . . Angel Falls is fifteen times the height of Niagara Falls, or twice the highest of the Empire State Building. The press carried the story on her triumph around the world, unfortunately scooping her own exclusive story for ‘National Geographic’ magazine. Today the falls are named for Jimmy Angle, the American bush pilot who first spotted them from air. No honor or recognition has been awarded to Ruth Robertson, the intrepid explorer who risked her life to measure them.
