Roughly two or three centuries after Suryavarman II’s reign, when Hinayana Buddhism spread over Cambodia, Angkor Wat was turned into a monastery. Buddhist monks placed inside the monument gold-covered images of the Buddha, when they worshiped then continue to worship today.
