Portable shrines were designed to close for transportation and open for prayer and teaching. Unlike stone shrines, which often had metal hinges, examples made of wood could be tied together using string or cord. The sandalwood example shown here, once painted green and red, consists of a central panel and two wings. The middle piece displays a crowned celestial (as opposed to the historical) Buddha – probably Vairocana – seated in meditation. He is attended by several other figures including eight bodhisattvas – beings of advanced spiritual development who chose to remain accessible to others in the phenomenal world – at the side. . . .
