Of all the goods that traversed the Silk Road, it is paper – the most humble – that arguably had the greatest impact on global history. Chinese records mention the invention of paper by a court official named Cai Lun (ca.50-121 CE) around 105. However, excavation at numerous sites in central Asia have yielded paper that can be dated earlier, and it is thought that this versatile material was actually first developed in South China sometime in the second or first Century BCE.
