Of the two images of Athena (one for the outside, one for the inside of the temple), the most imposing was the thirty-three-foot-high statue placed on the ‘naos’ (an ancient temple or shrine.) of the Paarthenon. The abundance of gold that covered the goddess's tunic, shield, hamlet, and spear stood in contrast with the milky-white brightness of the ivory, which was chosen for her naked arms and for her face, which was illuminated by the sparkling beauty of her eyes made of colourful stones.
