Fig.133 Pointing Lady

A counter point to the gesturing androgynous angels and saints is a poetic and sweet drawing known as the ‘Pointing Lady’ (fig. 133), which the renowned scholar Carlo Pedretti called “perhaps the most beautiful drawing by Leonardo.” the subject has same mysterious and enticing smile as her male counterparts, and she likewise is looking directly at us, directing our attention to a mystery unseen. But unlike Leonardo’s various angels of the period, there is nothing devilish about her. ~ Page 473 (Excerpt “Leonardo De Vinci” Author Walter Isaacson

"The Pointing Lady" is likely referring to a drawing by Leonardo da Vinci, known by several names including "A Young Woman Pointing" or "The Lady Pointing the Finger", rather than a famous painting. This black chalk drawing, created around 1480 or 1515, features a young woman in profile, though the exact identity of the subject is debated.

Possible Interpretations and Names:

"A Young Woman Pointing": This is a widely used title for the drawing.

"The Lady Pointing the Finger": Another common name for this artwork.

"The Pointing Lady": The name you provided, which is a known way to refer to the drawing.

This drawing has generated much speculation about the identity of the woman and her gesture, with some suggestions including Beatrice d'Este, Matelda from Dante's Purgatorio, or even Lisa Gherardini
