. . . The image of the witches’ sabbath was often reproduced in boradsheets by the early seventeenth century. This German etching from around 1625 entitled ‘See, how the devilish witches swarm’ (Plate 2.11) is typically of the genre, depicting a large number of devils, demons and witches involved in all sorts of nightly, magical and demonical activities in a mountain valley, while the text warns the reader of the danger of such activities. ` Page 89
