As I sat on a rock by the seal, I wondered: Did consciousness arise via evolution with the development of the human brain and culture, or is it inherent in the universe? For me, the question cannot be answered logically, byt only experientially -- like the question, Does God exist? There is no right or wrong answer that can be proved or disproved. I either experience the world as consciousness or I don’t.
Is consciousness inherently language-based? The query certainly is, but when I step back to notice the space of consciousness, I have no idea of the answer -- and can see no way to find out. As soon as I frame the question, I’m in language and carry the answer with me.
