On May 6, 1911, while out on the sea ice with Scot, Silas witnessed the collapse of Pointing’s (Photographer) beloved ice cave. The collapse sent small tidal waves rolling over the ie and rocked bergs farther out to sea. Silas and Griffith Taylor were secretly pleased to see the demise of the ice cave. They had spent many chilly hours trying to keep their balance on the sheer ice in the side the cave while Pointing fiddled about getting the exact photograph he was looking for. (Some time later, when Taylor first saw the famous Pointing ice cave photo, he was disappointed by how small he and Silas appeared in the photograph.) ~ Page 164
