Staniers finest

Taken on the same day as the previous photo of D216, is Coronation Pacific No 46241 'City of Edinburgh', with a southbound express.
Scanned from a print taken by my dad when he took a much younger me to Crewe for an afternoon.
Not able to put an approx date: ie "circa 1962" on the date thingy, so for now I'll make do with 29Sep62

Wonderful historic images, an advantage go digital the date is recorded, I suppose somewhere it would be recorded when this was withdrawn from service and the diesel was introduced

Tractacus replied to Peter Castell:

Thanks for the comments Peter. 46241 was withdrawn from service in September 1964 and stored at Edge Hill, Liverpool. It was scrapped in January 1964 at J Cashmores at Great Bridge.
The English Electric Type 4 - later known as Class 40 - were built from 1958 - 1962. D216 (40016) met it's end at Swindon works in 1983.

I loved my first visit to Crewe, which was only last year. Certainly must have been an exciting place back in the 60's?

Tractacus replied to Trevor King:

In those days, Crewe was beyond my means. Stockport Tiviot Dale was my nearest railway station, a relatively short walk. It wasn't until the 70s and 80s that I started making regular visits to Crewe.
