Often mistaken for Leicester castle because of its medieval-looking castellated frontage this is actually Leicester Category B Prison on Welford Road opened in 1828! The real Leicester Castle dates from 1068 becoming a royal residence in the 14th & 15th century but only the Great Hall survives today and it's not here! The Tigers Rugby stadium is visible far right BTW.

The journalist William Cobbett, who wrote about his journeys around England in the early 19th century, criticised the people of Leicester for being proud of their new prison, feeling that it would be more praiseworthy to have an absence of crime!

The last public execution at Leicester Prison took place on 25 July 1856, when an estimated crowd of 25,000 gathered to watch the hanging in front of this gatehouse.
