HFF Bennerley Nottinghamshire 31st May 2026
Opened in 1878 it formed part of the GNR's Derbyshire Extension and after opening of the GCR main line trains ran from Nottingham Victoria to Derby via Bagthorpe Junction until closure. It is one of only two wrought iron railway viaducts remaining in the UK.
Passenger services were withdrawn in 1964 and Bennerley Viaduct closed altogether, along with the rest of the line, in 1968 as a result of the Beeching cuts. A contractor was appointed to demolish the viaduct but wrought iron cannot be cut up using conventional metal-cutting equipment and it would therefore have to be dismantled piece by piece. The cost was deemed prohibitive and the viaduct remained in situ.
HFF to everyone. Have a brilliant weekend.
