HBM Erzberg Styria Austria 14th July 2024
We took a journey from Vordernberg on the preserved Erzbergbahn to Erzberg station reached shortly after leaving the 1.294m long Platten tunnel. The line onward to Eisenerz is currently closed.
Diesel railcar 5081.564-6 is seen after arrival. The station used to be the place where iron ore was loaded onto trains that ran over the former rack line to Vordenberg, steam-hauled until 1978 & diesel-hauled until closure in 1988. It was also a passenger station, although there was no exit onto public roads/trails, only to the internal road system of the mine.
Today the output of the open-cast mine is transported by rail but northwards rather than over Präbichl summit.
HBM to everyone. Enjoy the start of the new week.
