Manchester Victoria station 8th June 1968

At Manchester Victoria Stanier Black 5 4-6-0 45420 was on station pilot duty sorting parcels vans in the terminal platforms (which now see Manchester's trams come and go instead) when I visited.

45420 was built in 1937 by Armstrong Whitworth and was withdrawn from Newton Heath shed 3 weeks after this shot when the shed closed to steam. Like many of the final survivors of the steam era it was cut up at Draper's scrapyard in Hull in early 1969.
