This photo was taken by a Kowa Super 66 medium format film camera with a KOWA 1:2.8/85 lens and Kowa L39•3C(UV) ø67 filter using Ilford Delta 3200 film, the negative scanned by an Epson Perfection V600 and digitally rendered with Photoshop.

It is an enormous rotating turntable. Just out of the picture is an elevated track that can be positioned so that a locomotive can be shunted out of its berth and onto an outside track (or reverse).

I learned about this by watching Thomas the Tank Engine videos with my sons decades ago.
