Bear Flag Revolt

In the Plaza of Sonoma is a plaque commemorating an 1846 revolt by Yanqui settlers who captured the Mexican garrison here and declared the Bear Flag Republic.
The Mexican governor sent 55 men to attempt to crush the rebellion, but General José Castro's forces were defeated at the Battle of Olompali.
