Yes. Read his obituary in The Times yesterday. Many interesting things about his life I certainly didn't know! Superb shot, Laura!

raingirl replied to Andy Rodker:

He had a photography exhibit in our town just last year. His more recent photographs. They were printed on newsprint then destroyed after. I got to see the exhibit.

thanks for the compliment on my photograph. i'm trying to come up with a series 'driving portland' - to give a feel for my city how i know it. it is a work in progress. but i wanted to do something, not an homage, but something about being on the street for Robert Frank.

A beautiful low-light urban landscape image. I love the colour tones in the sky and especially the sharp and clean silhouettes.

I'm not familiar with Robert Frank..............so thanks for the link - I'll be investigating it later!

raingirl replied to Keith Burton:

thanks so much. we aren't a big sunset city, but enough for the occasional success.

let me know what you think about Robert Frank's photos. unfortunately one can't find his more recent photos - in a different style than the ones from the 50's. but his older ones give an interesting look at the u.s.

I don't know who he was but I like this electric night shot.

raingirl replied to Léopold:

He was a photographer who was his own man - he is most famous for his book The Americans from the 1950s. He traveled America and photographed all walks of like in a somewhat journalistic style, but with great art. He continued to photograph on the edge of what was considered "the way to photograph" of the times. His work is inspiring. A few of his famous images can be found here: www.newyorker.com/culture/photo-booth/eight-photographers-on-their-favorite-image-from-robert-franks-the-americans

Nice idea!
Oh yes, I've read about Robert Frank recently. He was born in Switzerland, that's why they wrote an obituary in the newspapers probably...

raingirl replied to polytropos:

thanks. i got to see a show of his recent photographs a little over a year ago. a local photographic gallery connected with him. the enlarged photographs were printed on newprint type paper so that they wouldn't last - requirement from Frank. he was sad that everyone seemed to not move with him past The Americans book and see his continuing photographic ideas.
