Nederland - Renswoude, Koepelkerk
April 1638, Johan van Reede, Lord of Renswoude, submitted a request to the States of Utrecht to have his own church and minister. Permission was quickly granted and on 11 November 1638, the first minister was confirmed. In August 1639, the first stone of the Koepelkerk (Domed Church) was laid. Construction lasted until 1641. There's no real evidence for it, but the design is usually attributed to well known Dutch architect Jacob van Campen.
The square facade stone shows the coats of arms of Van Reede-Van Eede and is adorned with the Danish Order of the Elephant. The coats of arms painted on the ceiling of the dome are those of the donors who financially supported the construction of the church. Below them are twelve royal coats of arms.
Until 1922 the church was the property of the lords of Renswoude, after which it was handed to the reformed community of Renswoude. The Koeplkerk is a Dutch national monument.
