Red-necked Grebe
A very distant, cropped photo of a Red-necked Grebe that we saw swimming in the lagoon at Carburn Park this morning. I'm pretty sure this is the first photo I've got of this species, as I so rarely see them, so wanted to include it in my Birds of Alberta Set. It was interesting to watch as it wrestled with a fish in its bill.
"All Grebes carry their newly hatched young on their backs. The heavily striped young can stay aboard even when the parents dive underwater. The scientific name "grisegena" means "grey cheek" - a distinctive field mark of this bird". From "Birds of Alberta" by Fisher and Acorn.
