The plaque above the number plate reads: 'On this site, Sept. 5, 1782, nothing happened.'

I know it's a common joke and I have seen similar before, but in a small medieval town, full of history and plaques referencing historical facts, it felt particularly suited as a sign pointing to exceptional circumstances.... then again, I thought Sandwich people have a great sense of humour....
