Picture Post 2

The Picture Post, published between 1938 and 1957; a pioneer of photojournalism. Now a lonely, faded painted poster on Stockwell Road.

In January 1941 Tom Hopkinson [its editor] published his Plan for Britain. This included minimum wages throughout industry, full employment, child allowances, a national health service, the planned use of land and a complete overhaul of education. This document led to discussions about post-war Britain and was the forerunner of the Beveridge Report that was published in December 1943 (quoted from www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/Jpicturepost.htm)

Now a mere ghost advert, meaningless to all who walk by, fades silently away just like the noble ideals of yesteryear ....
