This guy landed on the post and began gnawing on the wood loud enough that I could hear him! I have been told by my Bugtographer pal, Phil Huntley-Franck, that this hornet is extremely nasty if aroused to anger. In this case, I approached cautiously and moved very slowly to take its picture before leaving as quietly as I came.
