Old growth
A white fir, I think, but I won't commit to an identification! This is in the upper reaches of Horsethief Canyon, off California State Route 88. Altho this highway has been a thru route for the emigrants since the 19th century, the lower part of the canyon is very steep, and that probably protected this tree and others in the vicinity. There were easier pickings! Horsethief Canyon, in fact, is supposed to get its name from its use as an escape route for--yes--horsethieves. Inset highlights the scale.
