Fine shot and nice looking dog.
The name Pasco (a common Cornish name) recalls the exodus of Cornish miners in the 19th century, many moving out here to seek their mining fortunes after the crash in the market for Cornish tin.

slgwv replied to Andy Rodker:

Interesting! Lots of Cornish miners emigrated to the US in the 19th century--I guess it shows how grim things must've been in Cornwall, that working on the Mother Lode looked better. They brought lots of mining technology with them, and indeed traditional mining terminology in the US West was a hodgepodge of Cornish and Mexican Spanish terms. Cornish pasties are to this day a traditional specialty in Grass Valley, California, in the heart of the Mother Lode country.

Even so, I suspect most of the "Pascos" in the US West were named for Cerro de Pasco in what's now Peru, one of the biggest silver deposits ever discovered, just as lots of strikes were named "Ophir" after King Solomon's legendary mines. Word magic, I suppose! ;)

Thanks, everyone, from him too! (Pam--his name is short for "King Cole." We also have Jack and Jill. And Jeff, he was just enjoying running around!)

Andy Rodker replied to slgwv:

Maybe Cornish miners went to Peru as well (actually, I'm sure they did), and one of them gave his name to Cerro de Pasco - then came to the US West!
(OK, maybe not!)
Surprised about the pasties! Are they any good?

slgwv replied to Andy Rodker:

As to the pasties: I can't say from personal experience, but apparently they were popular locally. They were made in a couple of plants that fell under my wife's purview when she worked for the USDA in meat inspection, and they said they used traditional recipes!
