It's not peak commuter time...

On the passenger/automobile ferry MV Walla Walla, crossing Puget Sound from Kingston to Edmonds, Washington state, USA (north of Seattle). We timed our ferry ride specifically to miss the commuter rush!

Well, it's public transportation, so it doesn't need to make a buck anyway! ;) Apparently the WSDOT operation is the successor to a number of private ferry companies, which _were_ often on the edge of financial disaster. Based on the pricing, passengers are actually strongly encouraged over vehicles, presumably to help keep traffic down around Seattle. Lots of people commute on the ferries into the Seattle area proper, and most don't bring cars. Either they take a bus once they get to the other side, or (as one friend of ours used to do) they keep a clunker parked on the other side and just use it. If you do _that_, you want a dilapidated enough vehicle that it's not a target for theft, since you're leaving it parked overnight in some public lot!
Here's a link to more than you probably want to know ;)
