Scotty's Castle, 1958

Death Valley National Park, California, USA. From a slide of a family trip in 1958. I got a kick out of the parking lot--it looks like a classic car rally, but that's what people really drove then! ;) At this time Scotty's Castle, altho completely surrounded by Death Valley National Monument (as it was then), was still privately owned and administered. The Park Service finally took it over in the 1980s or so.

Well, I was all of 5! ;) We used to do overnight trips there a lot from Vegas when I was a kid. Wasn't quite so crowded then, either!

What a great lot of vehicles! There's a pickup with a camper shell toward the back - they were doing the trip right!

And campers were a New Thing then!
