Giant Juniper

A mammoth juniper growing high above its usual range, probably ~10K feet. Rock Creek, Sierra Nevada, California, USA. We heard about this juniper stand at the local resort; it's on an exposed slope where they can do better than the usual trees you find at this elevation. It turns out this occurrence is not unique; we've since seen lots of huge junipers at high elevations on exposed slopes in the Sierra. I may get a chance to post a few of those pix along-- Map position is approximate.

Thanks, everyone! These are strange occurrences of a plant that is otherwise better known as a component of the semiarid scrub! Presumably they can survive on these open slopes, even so far above their usual range, because they're more drought-tolerant.
