View from the Trail

Looking east, back down the trail up to White Mountain Peak. The approach follows the smooth ridge in the middle distance. Irrigation in Fish Lake Valley, Nevada, is visible in the background at upper left.

Interesting! It's got to be much drier as well as much larger scale--the mountain we're climbing, White Mountain Peak, is >14,000 ft and that smooth ridge in the middle distance is around 12,500'. Those irrigation circles in the valley in the distance are around 25 miles away. We're in the rain shadow of the Sierra Nevada here, so these mountains--and even more so the valleys in between!--get shorted on the rain and snow. The University of California maintains a research station at 12,470 ft (where we started the climb, in fact), and the average annual precip there is <20 inches.
