A colleague told me, that the autumn/fall is especially nice in Vermont, including lack of mass tourism.

It's a popular time for out of state visitors, but a comparatively small number of tourists compared to other beautiful places and the rural nature of Vermont keeps the crowds quite spread out throughout the state.
It's a helpful financial influx mostly - to offset the March/April "downtime" or "mud season".
Of course, our Canadian visitors have plummeted (understandably) since the absolute fool in the White House has antagonized them on multiple levels.
