Solemn

Added (late) to the Vintage Photos Theme Park monthly theme of: CDVs AND CABINET CARDS
This is a CDV, a Carte de Visite, (about 41/2 by 21/2 inches) so quite smaller than a Cabinet Card.
I think I bought this in Warrensville, New York.
The photographer was G.F. Marvin of Keeseville, New York.

Once, kids mostly wore the same unisex little outfits. It was slightly weird, but nobody panicked about it. Then brands discovered that “for boys” and “for girls” meant selling twice as many clothes. Suddenly this new trick was marketed as a deep, timeless tradition. Now we call it culture, but it’s really just capitalism playing dress‑up.

I also remember reading that c.1920s (and before, probably) that blue was considered too feminine for boys. Imagine - blue for girls!
Growing up, I remember liking pink - but there was no “pink girl hysteria” in Britain - and I don’t remember it over in the States, either until much later.
