Coltsfoot

I’ve been keeping an eye out for this flower. It’s the first roadside flower of spring in Vermont - and grows in the gravel and dirt of roadsides under pretty harsh conditions.
It’s always cheering to see - and this year I saw the first examples in our own border ditch this past Saturday, April 11, 2026.
What a hardy little plant!
Below is a shot taken by my husband on a bike ride, April 21, 2023

They’re weird little alien type flowers (look at those thick stems and buds) but at this time of year we worship any note of color in the landscape, starving to see anything that’s not grey or brown. And they are truly harbingers of more color - because - hooray - less than a week later, we now have green grass!
Next week - hints of tree leaves beginning to show.
