Jean Morère by Bacard
Jean Morère (1836-1887); French tenor who created the role of Don Carlos in Verdi’s eponymous opera in Paris (Salle Le Peletier) on 11 March 1867. In 1861 he made his debut at the Grand-Opéra Paris as Manrico in Verdi's "Il Trovatore". His engagement lasted until 1869 and the highlight was the première of Verdi's "Don Carlos", with Marie Sasse, Pauline Gueymard-Lauters, Jean-Baptiste Fauré and Louis-Henri Obin in the other leading roles. That season the opera "Don Carlos" was performed 43 times. He was also very successful in Brussels and in 1865 he sang at the "La Monnaie" the role of Vasco da Gama in the Belgium première of Meyerbeer's "L'Africaine". Since 1871 -at the height of his performing- he gradually lapsed into insanity.
