Carl Rosa by Gurney

Carl Rosa, born Karl August Nikolaus Rose (1842-1889); German conductor and violinist. He was the second husband of soprano Euphrosyne Parepa-Rosa (1836-1874) and he established together with her the Parepa-Rosa English Opera Company. In 1873 the name was changed into Carl Rosa's English Opera, because his wife was pregnant. Euphrosyne Parepa-Rosa died in childbirth in London at the age of 37; Carl Rosa endowed the Parepa-Rosa Scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music in her memory.
