Mikis Mantakas was a Greek nationalist student in Rome. He was known for his active involvement in political movements and was particularly opposed to leftist extremism. During his studies in Rome he joined the youth of Italian far-right party the Italian Social Movement (MSI), FUAN. He was shot dead in 1975 during a riot at a trial of the left-wing terrorist Achille Lollo.
Italy experienced its Years of Lead, with many deaths, killings etc. from the late 1960s to the late 1980s.

25 April is the day of liberation from Mussolini. It is a national holiday and it is also popular with the left.
