The Louvre was first a palace, started in the 12th century. First its purpose was military, later it became a residence. Louis XIV moved his court to Versailles and the Louvre was used to show the Royal collection. It only became a public museum after the French Revolution. The Louvre Museum opened on 10 August 1793. In 2023 there were close to 9 million visitors.
