Florence 2023 – Cospito libero, no 41-bis

Alfredo Cospito is an Italian anarchist. He was sent to prison for 10 years for kneecapping the head of the Italian nuclear power company Ansaldo Nucleare. Whilst imprisoned, he was convicted of the 2006 bombing of a Carabinieri barracks for life. In prison the 41-bis regime was applied to him, keeping him in solitary confinement for 22 hours of the day. The 41-bis prison regime is based upon the article 41-bis, that allows the minister to keep prisoners under strict regime. It was enacted in the 1970s, when the Italian government had to fight communists terrorists and mafia. Cospito started a hunger strike, but ended it after 180 days when the Constitutional Court reduced his life term to a fixed term of 23 years.
