Great Eastern

On this day (January 31) in 1858 the Great Eastern was launched. It was designed by Isembard Kingdom Brunel, and it was the biggest ship of the 19th century. It had an unhappy history, but it did lay several telegraph cables across the Atlantic. The Great Eastern was sold for scrap in 1888.
