Bremen 2015 – Roland’s belt buckle

Roland dates from 1404. He symbolises the independence and freedom of the city. There are Roland statues in several European cities. Roland was a paladine of Charlemagne, who died at the battle of Roncevaux Pass in 778 AD. The Bremer Roland faces the cathedral, where the bishop had his power base.
