Gorcums Museum 2015 – Torture of the Martyrs of Gorkum

Nineteen catholic clerics and friars were hanged in 1572 by Lumey, leader of the protestant rebel forces. They were first tortured. They were declared saints in 1867.

The murder of the martyrs of Gorcum came after years of repression of protestants by the catholics. Lumey vowed to take revenge after the murder of two noblemen, the counts of Horne and Egmont in 1568.
