While the Netherlands and Britain fought wars over the control over the seas and the colonies, since Napoleon Dutch diplomacy turned increasingly towards Britain to protect the Netherlands against French and German plans to control the entire continent. After the Second World War Dutch diplomacy became “Atlantic”, i.e. turned towards the USA, to protect against the French-German axis and the Soviet Union.
