This conflict has some deeper roots. Kiev was the place where the Russian state was founded (in the Middle Ages) and the birthplace of Russian christianity. The west of Ukraine was always in contention between Russia and Poland and/or Austria-Hungary. Only after 1939 the west of present-day Ukraine became part of the Soviet empire. After the Czar was toppled in 1917, Ukraine tried to become independent, but the Soviet regime prevented that. Stalin caused a famine in Ukraine in 1932 and 1933 and that caused a lot of anger in Ukraine against the Russians. In the east of Ukraine there is an important coal and steel industry, with a lot of Russians living there.
I think the people in Ukraine want to live in a more or less normal country. You might think mr. Ford is a bad politician, but it is nothing compared to the corrupt regime just disposed.
It is strange that Japan never acknowledged its deeds if you compare it to Germany. There they seem to revel in telling the German youth about the badness of the deeds of the Third Reich.
