It's not what I call it - it IS tonemapping, and I think it's produced a very pleasing result here. With an HDR subject of this kind, where most of the subject is in deep shade, it's the only way that all areas can be rendered. With a straight .jpg, every area would be either underexposed or badly overexposed.
