The Herd Groyne Lighthouse

Stands on the south side of the River Tyne, in South Shields, to guide ships through the entrance to the river. The Groyne shows an occulting light which marks a safe entrance course between the piers, showing white to a vessel approaching from seaward on the correct course, green to a vessel off-course to the north, and red to one off-course to the south. A great capture, and a cleverly simple piece of navigation equipment.

A relatively small, but very impressive lighthouse. I really like the red paintwork and it stands out perfectly against the sky.

Very nicely composed and taken John.

John Cook replied to Keith Burton:

Thanks, Keith. The Lighthouse had a lick of paint in 2014, three years before I took this photo. It had another in 2024.

It good that it's being properly looked after!
