My headlamp was just a pretty bright small flashlight attached to a bar with a silicon bracelet. Not the best, but good enough for my 13-miles-each-way commute. I always turned my lamp off when there were no vehicles coming either way. It takes about 6 long seconds for me to see again after I turn off the light. I made better headlights a few times over the years, as was kind of obsessed with improving my lights.
