Andy Goldsworthy, Storm King Wall, 1997-98, Storm King Art Center, New Windsor, NY USA (DSC 9261)

Andy Goldsworthy, Storm King Wall, 1997-98. The wall is about 694 meters long and is made of 1,579 tons of field stones. Incorporating the remains of a fallen-down farm wall that Goldsworthy discovered on the site. I posted another photo, DSC 0219, in HFF from the Storm King Art Center, a great outdoor art space, about 100 km north of New York City.

Super shot!
My understanding is that there are many such dry-stone walls in The Appalachians and these indicate former settlements and former farmland areas, later given over to forest as more attractive and easier to farm farmland became available further and further west. So it may seem a bit incongruous to see these walls in the middle of a vast forest, but it just shows how young much of the forest actually is! If I've got this wrong, please feel free to correct me!

Storm King is far north of the Appalachians. But the history may be similar. The grounds themselves have been sculpted by a landscape architect. So while it may look like natural progression, it is not. The wall is an art piece. The forest may look natural, but may instead also be art. I’m far from an expert, but visiting Storm King is a great esthetic experience.

Thank you for the correction. As it says in Dune; 'To be saved from error is a gift from God!'
... (Just re-read that and I should point out it was a bit of tongue in cheek!)
