House sparrow (Passer domesticus) – a citizen of the world
The house sparrow is a cultural successor and has been associated with humans for over 10,000 years. Large parts of Europe and Asia are its natural range. However, it has been introduced by humans to America, Africa and Australia and is now one of the most widespread bird species in the world.
In Europe, the population declined in the second half of the 20th century. In Finland, the house sparrow is highly endangered.
