Les faînes, fruits du hêtre apparaissent en automne, tous les deux à trois ans environ et de manière abondante. Elles tombent d'elles-mêmes quand elles sont mûres. La faîne est la partie brune triangulaire qui se trouve à l'intérieur de la cupule hérissée, laquelle ressemble à une toute petite bogue de châtaigne.
