World Photography Day 2024

A rainy day and evening brought me to a street corner to take photos to celebrate World Photography Day. I've always loved rain wet streets and traffic lights, especially when a light turns red. I'm reminded of one of my favourite Dylan Thomas poems, with the lines ... "I liked to walk through the wet town after midnight, when the streets were deserted and the window lights out, alone and alive on the glistening tramlines in dead and empty High Street under the moon ... " On a practical note, all the road markings and colours are for our new bike paths.

The rain can make a dirty, unkempt street seem like a wonderland. I love the red and the green, the lights reflecting and shimmering. Even the grass growing at the edge has a soft feel. You've made it seem quite romantic!

Great choice for World Photography Day and thanks for explaining why you chose this picture.

Dylan Thomas said it perfectly, I can understand the feeling, somewhat similar for me than driving at night through a city under rain and not a soul, just some traffic lights... it has something magical.

The rain has created a wonderful effect, I hope the cycle lanes get more use than in Leicester where vast amounts of money has been spent on them

Oh Saj, I totally love this. (How could raingirl not?) Besides the great composition and the wonderful colors and shapes, did you notice the plants growing along the curb on the right have the feel of a line of trees? And that little bit of yellow at the top makes it.

And I'm jealous, your green for your bike paths is a way better green than ours. How a city with so many trees in it could pick such a bad color of green for our streets is beyond me.

Were you planning on a city scene for the event?

Happy World Photography Day!

Saj Henderson replied to raingirl:

We do share a wet west climate, rain is my lullaby and I fall asleep much faster if I hear it. The plants along the curb were a bonus, I wasn't expecting them among all the concrete. This is the same corner where I took last year's photo for World Photography Day, so a little continuity to my thinking. Plus it's close to home! Thank you laura for making this event such a rich part of how we see the world through photographs.
